The mission of the Census and Redistricting Committee is to support Census 2020. Members Jeanne Crevier and Julieta Crosby—representing League’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, and Marian Harrison, Leader for the North Unit, are representing LWVSC at monthly meetings of the Complete Count Committee in Snohomish County.
We worked with Sno-Isle Libraries, partnering with the LWV of Whidbey Island, to set up voter registration tables at nine libraries in Snohomish and Island County communities and to help promote the 2020 Census.
The real excitement starts in 2021 when the new Census numbers will mean a realignment of legislative districts for Washington State. Our committee will support the work of the LWV of Washington State Census and Redistricting Committee in educating the public about legislation to add transparency to the redistricting process in Washington.
LWVWA has developed a program designed to teach citizens—and League members—how to “Speak-Up” about how they would like to see their districts realigned in 2021, based on numbers from the 2020 Census. LWVSC’s Board has agreed to sponsor citizen workshops around our county using this presentation.
Called “Speak-up Schools,” we will be practicing how to promote and publicize these, as well as how to teach the idea of citizen participation in redistricting.
