Our League's Action Chair will post Action Alerts here and in The Voter newsletter. These Alerts are messages to mobilize our members and supporters to take action in support of a specific point of view, with the goal of influencing public policy.
Take Action on Training for Law Enforcement
With support from LWV-WA State, HB 1064 was signed into law effective February 4, 2019. It implements the new training requirements for law enforcement mandated by 2018 ballot initiative I-940. Stakeholders have an opportunity to ensure that all law enforcement officers in Washington State have greater training and insight for what to do when they encounter individuals experiencing a crisis, possibly from mental illness. The law modifies the standard for use of deadly force by law enforcement officers, and also creates an opportunity for more robust crisis training for law enforcement officers.
The Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission has posted an online overview of De-Escalate Training. The rules for the training section of the new law need to be done by June. WSCJTC's Negotiated Rulemaking process for I-940 started meeting in February, and they need feedback from individuals with lived experience with law enforcement.
What do you believe law enforcement needs to take away from critical Crisis Intervention Training?
Families are currently left out of the discussion completely. They need to hear from families about personal experiences, successes, and suggestions for improvements to crisis response from law enforcement.
