Mature Forest Protection-Take a Hike!

Kate Lunceford | Published on 10/4/2024

League of Women Voters of Snohomish County, LFDC, and the Sno-Isle Sierra Club invite you to explore a legacy forest on Sat. October 5th.  Register here. Just outside Darrington, between the Sauk River and Squire Creek, DNR’s “Next Regeneration” timber sale threatens to clearcut over 86 acres of forest. Unlike industrial tree plantations, much of this forest is structurally complex and retains the biodiversity of natural forests once dominant in the Pacific Northwest.

The coming election will be pivotal to how we protect mature and old growth trees in Washington. The tools we need are funded by the Climate Commitment Act Natural Climate Solutions funding. Please fight to keep the CCA in law in Washington. Here’s how to mobilize on October 3 and October 10:

Campaign literature advocating a NO vote on I - 2117 and the other three initiatives. Sign up on Mobilize for phone banking, postcard writing, delivering yard signs, and more! Call Nancy Johnson by text or call or leave a message at 206-371-5499.
Weekday drop-in canvassing in Edmonds. Drop in to Nancy Johnson’s garage near Yost Park in Edmonds from 4:00-6:30 on Thursdays - through Oct 10th - to practice talking points, troubleshoot MiniVAN, pick up canvassing materials, select your local assignment, and pick up yard signs. Sign up on Mobilize

The Legacy Forest Defense Coalition is working on a forest management plan for us to bring to the Snohomish County Council. Our council has shown interest in participating in management of forest lands and sent this letter to the Dept. of Natural Resources requesting information of forest on public lands. The DNR responded to the council in September but not before this article was written. Stay tuned!

We continue our listening sessions to hear information and concerns from folks receiving timber revenue. We hope to develop trust in the community that we can find win-win solutions to forest management.
