What a February with all the Executive Orders from the White House that have left us feeling surprised and dismayed. With that said, welcome to March - a new month and we keep moving forward empowering voters and protecting democracy. Our mission is nonpartisan, and we will keep speaking up and doing whatever needs to be done.
I find that I feel better, stronger, and more able to speak up quickly and directly because of my connections to the National, State, and Snohomish County League of Women Voters. I recently have found that downloading our League in Action app is a great way to take action to support National League initiatives. I was able to contact my Congressional Representative and two Senators in
opposition to the SAVE Act, which as one of its voter suppression efforts would require your ID to match your birth certificate. How many married women have the same name on their ID as their birth certificate? FYI-The League in Action app is free for your smart phone or tablet. It doesn’t work on your computer.
Another tool that I find helps me take action is the LWV of Washington State Action Newsletter. You can
sign up for the newsletter on the LWVWA website and receive it in your inbox every Sunday - a list of the latest bills that need advocacy. And it’s easy to advocate. LWVWA provides a link to the WA Legislative website where you can sign in pro or con on the bills that we are advocating for based on our priorities.
Finally, our Snohomish County League will always alert you to local initiatives that need to hear from you, thanks to our fabulous Communications Team led by Jen Winckler. We are advocating for Mature Forests in Snohomish County and working to keep forest funds flowing to local entities like schools and taxing districts.
As I close this note to you, dear League members, I leave you links to two inspiring letters from our National CEO, Celina Stewart. One is called “
Our Oath to Democracy” in response to the Inauguration of the 47th President of the United States. Secondly - her press release denouncing the “
weaponization of government against Americans.”
As always, speak up wherever you can. Empower Voters, Defend Democracy.
