US Supreme Court draft opinion on Roe V. Wade

Jeanne Crevier | Published on 5/7/2022
The members of the League of Women Voters of Snohomish County join the national League to express their concern with the draft of the US Supreme Court opinion which would overrule Roe V. Wade and eliminate the constitutional right to terminate pregnancy.

The impact of the decision as drafted disregards the right of people to control their bodies. It purports to leave those decisions with the voters even as recent legislative action and court decisions restrict voting rights.

The draft decision, if it stands, would force women to have unwanted pregnancies. This includes those who have been victims of coercion, domestic violence, rape and incest who would endure many months of further trauma. Women with planned and desired pregnancies that need termination for reasons of fetal death or non-viability would also be endangered. The current decision completely disregards the physical and emotional well-being of women as well as recommendations from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

For those who believe that the right to terminate a pregnancy will remain protected in Washington State, please consider this recent statement that Mark Miloscia, Director of the Family Policy Institute of Washington made which said that the goal is “…getting a pro-life majority in Washington State.”

The right to reproductive freedom will most likely be overruled in the very near future. It appears that the only remedy will be at the ballot box. We urge everyone who supports a person’s right to control their reproductive decisions to show it by voting in every election; local, state and national.
