As part of LWVSC’s Resisting Threats to Democracy effort, 1440 red cards with acrylic “Know Your Rights” stands have been distributed to 24 Snohomish County food banks, libraries, and Goodwill stores. That's 60 cards to each location.
In addition, the LWVSC storage room has been stocked with five stands containing a total of 280 red cards: one for the Spanish language tabling bag, one for the resisting threats to democracy specialty bag (and a card about protest rights), and one for the High School/Teens specialty bag (and a card about protest rights).
We have 280 spare cards for replacement requests. (LWVSC’s generic business card is on the back of each stand, so each location can email if they need replacement cards.)
The response has been very positive. Examples:
- Granite Falls Food Bank folks said, “Love it! Thank you so much!”
- Sultan Food Bank was grateful for the cards and confirmed attendance has been down due to fear.
- Monroe Food Bank said they are “1000%” willing to display the stand with cards.
We are grateful to LWV Kittitas County for the idea and for the red card supply. It’s been a practical, useful civic education and public relations exercise with folks with whom LWVSC doesn’t typically interact. This has been a great way to resist threats to democracy – by informing folks of their rights in case they’re approached by ICE.
