Here are a few ways our League is showing up across Snohomish County, giving visibility to the work we do.
Award
We were honored to accept the award for Outstanding Civic Engagement from the City of Everett during Mayor Cassie Franklin’s annual Holiday Celebration and Volunteer Awards.
Mayor Franklin had this to say about our organization:
- The League of Women Voters continues to be a strong civic partner, championing voter education, community dialogue and participation in local democracy.
- Their work helps residents feel informed and empowered to engage in the issues that shape Everett – including the very well-attended candidate forum they hosted earlier this year. (Kudos to our Candidate Forum Committee!
- We are grateful for their longstanding commitment to civic health and community learning.
Our League Takes Center Stage at Sno-Isle Libraries
Each month our League is featured in the main display case at a Sno-Isle Library.
In December, we were highlighted in Mountlake Terrace. In January, we were at Mukilteo. This month we’re at Edmonds.
The library displays feature timely information about our League’s work and quotes from our members about why they are involved with the League of Women Voters of Snohomish County.
The displays attract attention each time a new one is set up, library patrons stop to ask questions, comment about the information, or tell us how much they like what they see.
If you’d like to get involved with the displays, contact
Jane McClure or
Brenda Mann Harrison.
Our Members’ Generosity Makes a Difference
At our December 18 all-member holiday party at the Lynnwood Library during the day, we once again collected food donations for Hope for Homies. In addition to the cans and bags of non-perishable food, members contributed $145 in cash donations. Thanks to all who supported our community in this way!
Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration
To celebrate Martin Luther King's Birthday, our League was asked to register voters at the VOAWW Carl Gibson Center on January 19 during the Greater Everett Area Community Celebration. This tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., an extraordinary figure who changed the course of the Civil Rights Movement and the history of America, focused on Building Community: The Dream and the Work.
Thanks to the following volunteers who helped engage the community at our table and assisted with set up and take down: Nadine Shanti, Jim Miller, Carolyn Miller, Laura Hudgins, and Brenda Mann Harrison.
Monthly League Articles in Homage
Each month, a guest article from our League appears in Homage, a special section that publishes in
The Daily Herald of Everett on the third Wednesday of each month. This is a great way for us to provide voter education and awareness of League issues. You can find past articles on the
Homage website, or in the print version of the Herald by going to its archives. Here is a
link to the text in the article that was published in the Jan. 21 issue. It was written by our League President, Lisa Utter, focusing on special elections on February 10 and April 28.
The Herald reaches 35,000 readers, and the special section is also mailed to 9,500 Homage subscribers. Subscribers can find the latest issue
here.
Tabling with the League of Women Voters of King County
Our Snohomish County League shared a table with the King County League at the A Festival of Activism at Shorewood High School on January 25, which included dozens of organizations from North King County and South Snohomish County.
We shared voter and education information during the crowded event and spoke with many individuals interested in learning more about what the League does.
Jim Miller and Carolyn Miller made set up and take down possible and represented us throughout the four-hour event with assistance from Brenda Mann Harrison, Lisa Utter, and Cathy Liu Scott.
The Snohomish and King County League Lisa Utter explains what we do to one of more than
share a table at the Festival of Activism. more than a hundred individuals who stopped by our table.
