As chair of our League’s Community Outreach Committee (also known as COCO), Shanti rallies parade walkers, engages bystanders in chanting “This is what democracy looks like,” and talks with community members about voting power.
As part of the Mountlake Terrace’s 2026 celebration of Black History Month, Shanti was among the Black women honored at a February 5 ceremony at the city council meeting for their leadership of students at Mountlake Terrace High School.
Shanti and volunteers registered 88 voters at the high school in January and talked with more than 130 students about voting and registering. Throughout January, Shanti and our volunteers visited a total of nine high schools and spoke with more than 1,100 students about the importance of voting.
The proclamation extended to Shanti read: “Nadine and the League are passionate about registering voters in high schools and ensuring young people are prepared to exercise their right to vote on election day.”
It continued: “Through voter outreach at our very own Mountlake Terrace High School - but also at four of our Everett School District High Schools as well as in Everett and Marysville - Nadine and the Community Outreach Committee have helped empower future voters and strengthen civic participation in our community.
“We are grateful for her leadership and the League’s continued commitment to democracy.”
Shanti acknowledged the proclamation on Zoom, saying, “The LWV of Snohomish County and Mountlake Terrace's DEI Commission are doing work that is vitally important at this time when our state’s rights and human rights, as guaranteed by our Constitution, are under threat.”
She added, “Let us all continue to stand and defend democracy, empower voters in our communities and champion diversity, equity and inclusion. Thank you for celebrating the respect that we deserve as human beings in our democracy, and thank you for this recognition of our commitment to the wellbeing of the members of our community.”
Nadine Shanti waves to everyone at the Mountlake Terrace City Council meeting from Zoom while council members line up for a group photo to celebrate the city’s 2026 Black History Month proclamation, which honored Nadine for her passionate work to register students to vote.
