Resisting Threats to Democracy

Wendy Staley Johnson | Published on 5/2/2026

Here are a few ways League members engaged in resisting threats to democracy this past month:
  • LWVUS hosted its monthly Democracy Integrity Briefing (for League members only).
  • The LWVWA RTD newsletter resumed April 9th with a subsequent edition April 23rd. Email Wendy if you aren't yet receiving these emails and would like to.
  • The LWVWA continues its Decline to Sign campaign for IP26-500—an initiative to the people similar to the SAVE America Act. Learn more about the initiative and the LWVWA's Decline to Sign campaign. Notify your partners of the League's stance on IP26-500. Please note that an update to the issue paper is in progress. Earlier this month LWVWA President, Karen Crowley spoke with KOMO News about IP26-500 and the security of our elections. Check out the interview.
  • April 24: Unite and Rise Playbook 5 released: Playbook 5 is focused on election mobilization ("People Power Summer") and covers May-July 2026. It builds on Playbook 4, which was focused on deepening electoral power and included a 90-day guide to Get Out the Vote (GOTV), including building an "Election Corps." Stay engaged in the fight for voting rights.
  • April 30, 2026 12-1:00 P.M.: Newly-Passed Restrictive Voting Laws Affecting Midterms: What You Need to Know The LWVUS Advocacy team gave a timely briefing on newly-passed restrictive voting laws that will be in effect for the upcoming midterm elections. Learn More.
In May:
  • Make time in your calendar to take action on daily democracy practices (for League members only).
  • May 4th 2:00-3:30 P.M.: LWVUS is hosting a virtual field call on Playbook 5 and the VRA Day of Action, including the menu of ways Leagues can engage and build power this summer. Register here.
  • May 12th 12:30-1:30 P.M.: Attend LWVUS Democracy Integrity Briefing (for League members only).

Mark your calendar for upcoming events:
June 14: Flag Day
No Kings plans to sponsor rallies. We are planning to table at local events in Edmonds and Everett and to ask partners like AAUW, YWCA, NAACAP, ACLU or other organizations to join us. LWVWA RTD tabling guidance is being prepared for IP26-500, IL26-638, and IL26-0220.

July 29: America250 Book Club
Plan to register for the inaugural meeting of the members only LWVWA civic book club series marking America250. Historian Heather Cox Richardson will join to discuss her book How the South Won the Civil War and the lasting impacts of the Civil War. Learn more about this event.

Aug 8: Nationwide Day of Action
