Hello LWVSnoho members and friends. We have several events scheduled for this summer. It’s important to get these events into your awareness and on your calendars ASAP. We will need lots of volunteers and several table captains to bring these eight events to fruition. LWV is making a determined effort to Get Out the Vote for the November election. This could be one of the most important elections of our lifetime. Make no mistake: our democracy, locally administered elections, and identity issues are on the agenda. We need everyone to step up and vote their conscience. But before we tell you what is coming up, let’s report on two outreach events we had in April.
Kate Lunceford did an excellent job of bringing the
National Apprenticeship Career and Job Fair on April 23 to COCO’s attention. Kate gathered a very strong team to reach these young people, who were entering Snohomish County’s work force. We wish to thank the members who showed up enthusiastically for the fair: Kate Lunceford, Gayle Joinette, Jamie Barrett, Vickie Roberts-Gassler, Daniela Birch, and Carol McMahon. Even with that full group of volunteers, Kate had two new members who wanted to come in and observe a community outreach event. Thank you also to Terrie Rae and Chris Anderson for your first foray into Voter Registration and education. Our new members are fabulously volunteering and making a difference in our community.
On April 25, we also did a voter registration and education event at the
NAACP Freedom Fund Gala, “Turning Dreams into Reality.” Nadine Shanti, Laura Hudgins, and Janelle Burke volunteered for this event. Lisa Watson, a Delta Sigma Theta Soror, joined us for this event and it was fun to have her with us once again. We continued the voter interaction that Erin Kester introduced at the No Kings Rally in March. We asked two questions: “Why do you vote?” and ”Why don’t you vote?” Thanks, Erin for initiating this project, which is helping us interact on a more personal level with attendees.
Okay now, hold on to your hats because here we go: upcoming events for COCO. This is just a list to whet your appetites. These will begin to go up on the LWVsnoho Website in May. Please visit the website in May, June, and July and see what is up and how you can help.
UPCOMING EVENTS NEEDING VOLUNTEERS:
- May 27: NAACP and the Black Student Union Summit Event at Everett Community College. Registering and educating voters in the BIPOC community.
- June 17: The Everett Station Street Fair. 32nd Street between Smith and McDougal Avenue. Nadine will be out of town, so we need a volunteer to be a table captain and organize this event. Please let Nadine know if you are interested (nadine.shanti@ gmail.com).
- June 20: The NAACP Juneteenth Celebration at Martha Lake. More information is coming soon.
- July 4: The Everett 4th of July parade. Starts at Colby Avenue at 11:00 A.M. This is a parade group event. There is no need for rehearsals this year. For the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we want a large group of LWVSnoho members to celebrate with us. The more the merrier. We will have time to talk you through two chants while we wait for the parade to start. There are no hand movements, no walking in step. This is strictly for fun. You just need to know how to say “Just Vote” and spell V-O-T-E. Please sign up to walk with us. We will also have a car that can take a few passengers.
- July 25: The SCBHC (Snohomish County Black Heritage Committee) Nubian Jam. Starts at 10:00 A.M. at Forest Park in Everett. More information is coming soon. A party not to be missed.
August 4: National Night Out in Mountlake Terrace: Celebrating Our Emergency Services Providers. Evergreen playfield: Starts at 6:00 P.M.
- August 15: Washington West African Center (WAWAC) Sounds of Africa. Starts at 1:00 P.M in Garfield Park, Everett. This is our second time at this event. Great food, lots of music, colorful costumes and musical presentations. This is a Get Out the Vote Activity to encourage voting in the November elections for members of our BIPOC communities.
- August 29: Evergreen State Fair. More information is coming soon.
It is going to be a fun festival season and great opportunities for the League’s Community Outreach Committee (COCO). See you all soon. Please volunteer.
