Natural Resources Committee

Mission of the Committee

The Natural Resource Committee raises public awareness of the ecological value and interrelationship of natural resources.

We educate the public
to protect natural resources
to mitigate climate change and enhance sustainability
to act as stewards of an Evergreen Community
to personalize carbon offsets

We advocate for
sustainable use of agricultural, urban and rural lands
environmental justice
renewable energy resources

Goals:
To describe steps important to “Becoming An Evergreen Community” – important for tree canopy preservation in the urban growth area
To educate the public about the Growth Management Act and Comprehensive Plan Update 2024 and other land use terms
To create a communication network for local environmental groups
To develop partnerships with diverse environmental organizations
To generate multiple platforms for educating the public about effective mitigations for climate change – e.g. Zoom forums, YouTube, powerpoints and movies
To develop mapping information to assist in environmental equity and wildlife corridor preservation
To grow community interest in environmental volunteerism

Our Work

Climate Change Emergency: Health and a Million Trees

Our committee presented Climate Change Emergency: Health and a Million Trees featuring Dr. Richard H. Gammon, Dr.Jon Witte, and Elby Jones. These experts discussed the risks of climate change and human actions that contribute to it. Take the Carbon Footprint Quiz introduced in the presentation. Answer the questions about carbon footprint of greenhouse Gas (GHG) sources in the United States and climate change mitigation. You’ll get correct answers and more information on ways to reduce your personal carbon footprint.

The committee created the video Impacts of the Growth Management Act in Snohomish County. Tim Trohimovich, Director of Planning and Law at Futurewise talks about tools the Growth Management Act provides for better planning; how the Puget Sound Regional Council Vision 2050 will influence planning in Snohomish County; and how Snohomish County Tomorrow will influence the Comprehensive Plan Update.
