Mission of the Committee
To enhance participation in democracy, the Civil Discourse Committee advocates and educates for civil discourse. Such civic conversations – at a minimum – reflect careful and respectful listening to diverse perspectives through orderly, constructive exchanges with the aim of improved governmental decisions, processes and policy.
Goals
- Create a communication platform that allows all local Leagues to share ideas on topics and methods to promote civil discourse within their various communities.
- Generate a citizen pamphlet, app, and link to assist civic participation at the local level, highlighting key steps and elements of civil discourse.
- Work to get such a pamphlet, and the handout Your Voice Matters, shared throughout the county at various councils.
- Continue partnerships with Braver Angels, Sno-Isle Libraries, Everett Library, and City of Everett to promote book discussions and conversations on Civil Discourse.
- Partner with Braver Angels on forums for training citizens on how to connect with others of another political persuasion.
- Listen intently to diverse segments of our community to hear their insights on civil discourse and how to promote it.
Our Work
"Civil Discourse for Civic Engagement" at Edmonds Community College on October 17, 2017 A panel of experts spoke on the state of civil discourse within their fields: Education, the Media, Politics, and Community.
"Civil Discourse: A Community Conversation" held at the Everett Library on April 29, 2018. The featured speaker was Jacquelyn Styrna, Director, Dispute Resolution Center, Volunteers of America, Skagit County, who outlined elements of civil discourse. The audience participated in circle conversations around these questions.
"Diversity: Conflict to Cohesion--The Role of Civil Discourse" held on October 24, 2018, at Everett Community College. Facilitator Bob Drewel posed questions to a panel who represented diversity within the county. The audience participated in discussion circles, supported by questions and references in this handout.
